  • Condition: Name written on the cover. Tape at the top wrapping around to the back. Tanning of the spine and covers near the spine. Back cover is wrinkled where too much glue was used to hold the map pocket - every one of these I have ever seen has this. Some roughing of the edges, and some corner bumping. A pretty good example of this old report.

    Description

    SCARCE ITEM!!  GREAT COLOR MAP!!
    It is USGS Bulletin 1027-B,
Geology of the Crazy Woman Creek Area, Johnson County, Wyoming
. Published in 1955, this is a pretty scarce item! This thick bulletin consists of a 118-page book and all eight of the original geologic maps and diagrams. This area near the Bighorn mountains is noted for huge coal deposits as well as other resources. One of the maps is a huge full-color map showing the eastern flank of the Bighorn mountains. This study covers an area of about 576 square miles.
The book covers the geology in great depth, and the rocks of the area span a great deal of time. Pre-Cambrian rocks are described in the Bighorn mountains as well as seven Paleozoic formations, thirteen Mesozoic formations, and four Cenozoic formations. Resources besides coal in the area include manganese, allanite, and bentonite, as well as oil and gas potential. It is a rich area. This study focuses extensively on the coal deposits, and the maps and diagrams tend to support that. It is a large, interesting report, over a half in thick and weighing nearly eleven ounces.
