ALMOST 50 YEARS OLD!!This is USGS Bulletin 1261-D,
Mission Mountains, Missoula and Lake Counties, Montana
. This report consists of the 48-page book and the original large map. The map sheet actually contains three maps of the same area, one showing geology, another showing sample locations, the third showing samples with the highest values of several important metals of economic interest. Published in 1969, there were probably never many of these around. The area covered in this work is about 118 square miles about 40 miles from Missoula. It is beautiful country that could be made even more interesting by bringing this along on any backpacking or hiking trip. Elevations range from 5600 feet to over 9,000 feet, so it includes a lot of high mountain country. The geology is diverse, with exposures of varied sedimentary and igneous rocks.
A couple nice photos within show interesting geologic features in this area. The geology of the area is covered in detail and the search for mineral resources is detailed as well, including investigations of some old claims in the area. Most of the area is mountainous terrain. All in all it is a scarce and very interesting and complete work on a beautiful area. Don’t miss it!
